Syllabus - Musical Theatre
- Refer to all Vocal and General Rules.
- All classes are OWN CHOICE. However, selections should be age-appropriate and adjudicators will consider the suitability of each competitor’s selection when making their decisions.
- Competitors will be judged on their vocal skills and acting technique.
- Competitors are allowed to use costumes and props. A maximum of 2 hand-held props will be permitted in each performance.
- Transposition to any key is allowed.
- Coaching during performance from teachers, parents, or other audience members is not allowed and may result in disqualification.
- All performances must be from memory with live piano accompaniment.
- The winners of awards must have entered at least two classes in this discipline.
- Competitors are strongly encouraged to use the searchable database provided by OMFA at omfa.ca/ssam-chart or the searchable database provided by the Toronto Kiwanis Festival at kiwanismusictoronto.org/ssam-chart when making their selections.
Songs of The Screen and More Solo
- All selections must have originally appeared in a movie, film, television show, or revue. Please refer to the searchable database at omfa.ca/ssam-chart or kiwanismusictoronto.org/ssam-chart to ensure that your selection is allowed in this category.
- Spoken passages are only allowed if published in the score being used, and cannot represent more than 10% of the selection.
- Offensive language found in song selections must be replaced with alternate words to ensure a “clean” version. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.
- Lengthy instrumental sections can be cut for performance.
- Stage movement is allowed and encouraged, but dance breaks are not permitted in any performance.
- Enter only the name of the composer on the registration form. Do NOT include the name of the librettist.
